Taste Testing Maple Syrup

Each batch of maple syrup has a unique aroma, flavor and taste. Have you tasted syrup from different places and thought some were better than others? Do you have a particular brand that is the Best Maple Syrup you’ve ever had? As it turns out, there are different varieties that go beyond the grade and your preferences will help you determine which kind is the best!

Like taste testing wines or beers, maple syrup has a taste testing sensory guide for you to explore all of the possibilities and varieties of Vermont maple syrup!

Steps for sampling maple syrup

We are leveraging the Map of Maple created by the University of Vermont to guide us in our efforts to be a Maple Connoisseur:

First be sure to smell the syrup. Try to pick out any distinct aromas. Aromas can often be described as floral, fruity, spicy, or even earthy.

Now, let’s talk about flavor! The flavors can be very similar to the aromas, and they come by descriptors such as toasted, milky, confectionery, spicy, fruity, floral, earthy, and even others, such as chocolatey or leathery.

These descriptions remind me of tasting wine! Earlier this year I was able to sample a wine from Spain. I joked with my mom that apparently I liked the taste of leather as the description included leather in it. It’s fun to see similar classes in syrup!

The next part is to determine the taste of it. This is a scale of sweetness and balance that translates to a maple intensity. How does it feel in your mouth? Is it thing, is it syrupy, is it thick?

Sometimes it’s fun to think of other food items with these characteristics, and compare with the maple that you are tasting!
